Dog chewing problem ranks high among all dog problems and possibly irritates the dog owner the most. Imagine your favorite shoes have been torn into pieces and one corner of your expensive Italian sofa has been ripped out.

There are a few reasons why dogs like to chew things.

1. Chewing fulfill their natural instincts to grab, bite, kill and consume. Dogs like to play with objects and pretend to KILL it by grabbing, shaking and ripping it apart.

2. Teething in young pups causes irritation to its gum and chewing helps to relieve this discomfort. During teething, your young pup will lost its appetite, refuse to eat and drool excessively.

3. Chewing is just fun for dogs regardless of their ages.

4. Chewing comforts them when they are alone.

It seems to be impossible to stop dogs from chewing; however, we can modify their chewing target with the help of dog toys. It will probably take a while to redirect its attention from your favorite shoes to dog toy. You need to be patient, and you are going to save lots of money (from repurchasing your favorite shoes) and less likely to get hypertension.

Never give your dog something of yours to chew on, like your discarded sandals or towels. They carry your body smell and once they are used to chew on things with your smell, it will be difficult to stop them chew on other things with your smell on them.

To train your dog to chew on dog toys, you first must be alert and be patient. Look out for you dog when it starts to chew on things other than the dog toys. At the moment, stop you dog from chewing by saying NO in a commanding tone. And immediate removes the chewing object and replaces it with the dog toy. Praise you dog when they start to chew on the dog toy; like a gentle pat on your dog and say GOOD DOG will be appropriated. Reinforce this behavior a few times and your dog will begin to chew on dog toys than any other objects.

To choose a suitable dog toys for your dog, firstly choose the right size of the dog toy (anything larger than it can swallow) prevent it from choking. The material should be non-toxic (even in the core of the dog toy) and should be tough and close to indestructible to withstand the enormous ripping force by the mighty chewer. Finally, a machine washable one will be definitely a great choice.

Material of choice for dog toys are also important. The dog toys should be made of non-toxic material, durable and washable. Kong, Westpawdesign, Chewber and Combat Extreme produce top quality safe and close to indestructible dog toys. These products are toughest in the current market and can withstand the mighty destructive chewing force created by your dog.

Last but not least, the dog toys must be able to catch the attention of your dog, bright color and design do play an important role. Reading some dog toy reviews prior to purchase will be a good idea.

A lot of people are afraid to trim their puppies/dogs nails - fearful that they will cut them too short and they will bleed. But, if two people work together (one holding the puppy and the other using the nail clippers) nail trimming is fairly simple. Most puppies have small enough feet/nails that common fingernail clippers work just fine.

Getting Started - Take a moment to examine your puppy's nails. You should be able to see three parts as follows: A white tip, A clear (see through) base, and the pink "quick" which is visible through the base of the nail. It's the blood vessel and nerve that supply the toenail that is called the "quick" that you want to pay attention too while clipping the nail.

Start trimming by clipping very small sections at a time, and trim the "white" tip of the nail - take your time - while you and your partner talk gently to him to keep him calm. Once you get close to the quick you are finished.

Bleeding

If you accidentally clip too close and the quick begins to bleed, don't panic - your puppy won't bleed to death or be permanently harmed. Have some baking powder or cornstarch handy and dip the bleeding nail into a small amount of it on your fingertip. Or you can purchase a product at the pet supply store called "Quick Stop" and do the same thing. This will stop the bleeding and then you can continue trimming the other nails.

Many people are developing a distrust for commercial dog food, but they don't know how to make homemade dog food. The commercial dog food companies are filling their foods with more and more junk, and it has many pet owners wondering what exactly they should feed their dogs and puppies.

Today I have three quick tips that can help you to learn how to make homemade dog food, and how to make sure that the food you are feeding them is safe and healthy.

* Feed your dogs whole foods. Meats, eggs, vegetables, and whole-wheat grains or brown rice. Junk food, while tasty, will make your dogs sick, as they can't handle processed food very well. White bread and white rice are overly processed as well, so stick with the more natural versions of these grains.
* A good rule of thumb is 1/3 protein, 2/3 vegetables and grains. However, don't forget the protein, and if you sway from these percentages, always go in favor of protein, which is vitally important for dogs. Almost any source of protein that you eat is just fine for your dogs, so if you have leftover meats, they make great dinners for your dogs.
* Watch the ingredients. Avoid spicy foods, as well as rich foods. These types of foods can harm a dog's stomach and cause him to become sick. Always keep with the theme of whole foods and vegetables. Also remember that dogs don't need you to season and spice their foods, and their stomachs will thank you for keeping it simple!

These tips can be helpful, but remember that there are a large number of human foods that can harm your dog. For example, almost everyone knows chocolate can be fatal to dogs, but did you know that macadamia nuts are also very bad for dogs?

Choosing to do this on your own can be very dangerous to your dog and very expensive, as those vet bills and medicines can pile up and cost you money.

When you've made the wise choice to cut off commercial dog food, it makes sense to get as much information as possible, and fortunately I can recommend a great website that can help you to get the information you need to learn how to make homemade dog food.
